could y'all share with me your favorite books on pilates for pregnant women, during and post.
also, could you just remind me of the most basic counter-indications for the first trimester and second trimester? Like what would you say to a first trimester woman who wants to take your mixed level mat class? (so far i just say what's true - I don't know enough to give them the kind of guidance I would like to, but if they already have the information they need to take care of their own body, they are welcome to join in on any exercises they feel are suitable.)

when doing roll downs & ups, its not a problem. when doing hundreds and 5's, it is a problem. and now i've spent all this time strengthening the wrong muscles and need to get out of that.

I'm new to the tribe, but not to Pilates. I've read through some of the blogs and know that some of you are familiar with Marie-Jose Blom-Lawrence, the founder/director of both Long Beach Dance Conditioning Academy and Angel City Body Kinetics (Long Beach and Marina del Rey).

Anyhow, she has developed a new product line via SmartSpine Works Company. I run their marketing and sales. End point, if anyone from this tribe is interested in purchasing product, I will gladly set up a 15% discount to accomodate. We will be at Body Mind Expo next month. And, we will launch our DVD (after many hard months of labor- please see the website for detail).

If you know MJ's rep, you know the rep of the product. If there is anyone out there currently using it already, I would LOVE feedback. I am in the process of designing a Blog for the site that people can share info, ways of use, etc.
She was a bit mystified as I have very loose hip flexors, a strong lower back & abs and good flexibility and strength in my hamstrings. Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises that will help reduce the lordosis? I'm tired of sleeping with a pillow under my knees ;-)

Thanks in advance!

I've found an AMAZING Pilates instructor, Karen Fox, here in Emeryville, Ca, at Mind Body Connection on Doyle Street.

She's recently relocated to the area from the Southwest. Once people start knowing about her it's going to be hard to get appointements with this woman! Check her out.

About Karens approach, let me sing her praises!! Her private lessons are the best I've had in any yoga, body worker or pilates instructor yet and I've taken a lot being a lifelong dancer and athlete for some 22 years. In her work she brings in some type of body energy work/modality that allows the work you do together to cut right to point. The work feels explorative, intuitive and very opening. She pushes me in ways I've needed to be pushed and has a great sense of humor while doing it. She helps me relax. I have a lot of tension I didn't even realise I had, yikes! She's helping me build awareness about how I move, so that I can make changes. She's not fitness craze oriented. The focus feels balance and health oriented, very insightful and fun. She's a bit of a comedian, I think you'll like her as much as I do!

What do you find the best books and videos/DVD's about pilates (or pilates and a combination of something else like bellydance or yoga, I've noticed people mentioning the Suhaila video)? In addition to classes, or as a tool to learn pilates at home... I already saw there was a thread on pilates tapes, so especially books then.

I have three books on pilates and a dvd that came with one of the books.
I don't attend classes, because I already take bellydance and yoga classes and have to make choices... And pilates doesn't have my main focus, bellydance has. I've learned pilates through books, and video taping and observing myself, and think that works well enough for me. I'd like to share the books I've been using, and am curious what other people have been working with.

- Pilates Body in Motion, Alycea Ungaro.
This is the book I use the most, very good descriptions, many clear, big photos in color, it teaches you the whole mat series with a preparation, a beginner, intermediate and advanced program. It also has two additional programs: The Wall Series plus working with the magic circle.
I find this book excellent.

- The Pilates Body, Brooke Siler
Another great book. The book has small black and white pictures, which I find a pity. They are clear enough, but I like the above book better. It also has illustrations in it, to show you how you can visualize things. It has elaborate descriptions from a bit different viewpoint then Ungaro's, and therefore I think that this book is a wonderful addition to Ungaro's book.
It also teaches you the complete mat series (seperate beginner/intermediate/advanced programs), plus there's a program for your arms (training with weights) and an additional section with very advanced extra moves.

Both Alycea Ungaro and Brooke Siler are very renown trainers and studied directly under Romana Kryzanowska, one of Joseph Pilates' direct successors.

-Ground Control Pilates, Debbie Jenner, with DVD
I think this book perhaps only comes in Dutch. Jenner is American though, so I'm not quite sure, but she's based here in The Netherlands. I just bought this book in a bookstore before I received the other two through the internet (which to a bit), to get started already. I've seen the dvd once, but didn't really like it. Not that it isn't a useful one, but I don't like practicing with dvd's, since it's never in MY tempo, but the dvd surely shows you how certain moves are done in real time.
Also, the book doesn't teach you a certain program, there are different programs to choose from, with focus on specific areas of the body, for example: thighs and glutes, or back, or stomach. I don't think this is a really great book, I like the full mat program the other two books offer, because it is very complete. But this book has some very good pictures and descriptions in it, so although I hardly use it, I do see it as an addition to the above two. It has some excercises in it, which can't be found in the other two books, and which I found helpful. This is a book I refer to if I need just one or two excercises for specific reasons.

Overall, I think it's better to study more than one book on the subject to get a broader view of pilates.

You may even have seen the strange, mammoth contraptions, somewhat resembling medieval torture devices, with ropes, pulleys, springs, and sliding beds. You probably can even name celebrities who swear by it. But, come on-- how much do you really know about Pilates?

Well, now’s your chance to uncover Joseph Pilates’ remarkable secrets for yourself…''

The Body Gallery, San Francisco’s acclaimed private Pilates studio is holding a rare Open House, Saturday, August 27 from 11am-3pm. Certified trainers will be on hand for mini-lessons, demonstrations, and to answer questions about the Pilates method. Drawings will be held for free sessions and discounts will be offered for new clients. The Open House welcomes guests (16 and over) at all levels of fitness. Beginners are encouraged!

The Body Gallery is owned and operated by three distinguished local trainers and performers: award-winning musical artist Jill Tracy, former Lollies’ burlesque/modern dancer Jesse Lindsey, and modern dancer Cassidy Moore. The three have been long-time devotees and are living testimony that Pilates can achieve a long, lean and graceful physique. Their colorful progressive backgrounds have attracted a diverse group of clientele from well-known local athletes, artists, and dancers, to rehabilitative and pre/post natal clients.

The Body Gallery customizes routines to fit the individual client’s needs and goals.

Amidst tropical plants and a flood of natural light, The Body Gallery has been called “one of the most beautiful and tranquil studios in the Bay Area.” The Body Gallery proudly displays the work of Bay Area artists. Paintings by Lisa Costiloe will be featured during the Open House.

I think it may appeal to someone who has trouble with the flexiblity aspect of Pilates or who "just likes to stretch more"
