Has anyone heard of A Body of Work pilates studio in SF? I'm thinking of doing my certification with them. They do pilates Integrated Teacher Training.

I haven't heard of them, but I'm hardly an expert on the industry. After reading the bios of the trainers, it does seem reputable.

Since Pilates is not a regulated industry (yet), you can't be 100% sure on the credibility of studios, training programs, or instructors without some research. However, a mentor told me a good way to determine a good training program is to determine the "lineage" of the master trainer. Who was he/she trained from? If you can trace it back to at least one of the first generation trainers (or "the elders"), then you're in pretty good hands.

Also, look at the training program itself. How many hours do you need to complete to get certified? A good program will require from 400-800 hours.

Also, will you be happy at the studio you're training at? One of the many reasons why I chose Ellie Herman studios is because of its diverse clientele and its inclusive, not exclusive environment.

Good luck and most importanly, have fun!!

I have heard of ITT pilates. I took a workshop from Joerg and Debra at the Mind Body Expo this year, and I would take more workshops with them. However, I would find out what type of certification they are offering. Is it from ITT or through Physical Mind? Next, I would ask yourself what type of certification are looking, one to work in the local area in one of there studios, at a fitness club that just requires some type of certification, or a certification that will be recognized in different states or abroad.

hi. new here. I joined cause i'm about to go for my certification and it occurred to me that there might actually be tribes on the subject. duh.

I'm in the Bay Area. I looked around and decided that the most serious school seemed to be Body Arts & Science International (BASI), which is a Rael Isacowitz school. The guy who does the certification program is Larry Hall, who is PMA certified, which is nice if you want to be PMA certified sometime down the road. PMA wants you to be OK'd by someone who is PMA recognized for at least 10 years. Rael Isacowitz fits that for sure. anyway, here's the site.

I think probably the second most serious program would be Elly Herman but that ends up costing twice as much and they don't really recognize what work you might have already done.

and yes, there are lots of kinds of certifcation, but i wouldn't trust ones that only require a few weeks of weekend training and would advise against doing a matt only certification. i mean you might be able to get work as an instructor with that kind of certification, but I don't think you would come away with a very good training.

its such a huge field when you're really getting into it. i just got a bunch of anatomy books and such as part of my preparation for the BASI certification program. its kind of intense. I mean i hadn't realized that there were 3 kinds of serratus and that a bunch of our obliques are actually under the ribcage. cool.

anyway, best of luck. and do let me know if you chose BASI. we could be study partners. :)
