Re: pilates classes/ tapes
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 6:54 AMI'm in love with the Winsor Pilates tapes. They are FANTASTIC!!! Here's my success story:
Mari gives you all these things, including a diet, along with these tapes. But I did the 50 minute advanced workout 3 times per week, with a couple of the 20 minutes basic workouts on my off days when I felt like it, and I did not change my eating habits at all. I did this for about 4 weeks and lost 5 pounds but I LOOKED even better than having lost 5 pounds! It's awesome! I'm sure if I did all the stuff Mari Winsor recommends then I would have lost even more. And you get so toned when you do this sequence of exercises. After the week or so you don't sweat at all when you do the stretches, but even the first week it is just a minor sweat. And it is painless and fun!
So I mean I would highly recommend it!! -

Sun, November 21, 2004 - 1:06 AMI love Winsor Pilates! I also got soooo toned by working out with these tapes. I would highly recommend them to everybody. I've been doing it for about two years and I'm never bored with it! Alison when did you get your tapes? Anybody else have any other tapes/dvds that they liked?

Re: pilates classes/ tapes
Mon, May 17, 2004 - 2:13 AMI've been taking classes at the Ellie Hermann Studio on Valencia between 25/26th in SF. The studio is incredible, and the instructors are excellent. They offer mat, springboard, reformer, etc etc etc!!! They have a teacher certification program. It's a great place to learn some basics, which can help especially at the beginning so that you are getting the excerices right before training your body with mat excercises at home.
Best of luck!! ; )

Re: pilates classes/ tapes
Fri, October 15, 2004 - 7:42 AMTapes from two series that I HIGHLY recommend:
Romana's Pilates- her tapes have a slower breakdown section of each move, with a workout. Romana ROCKS- studied with Joseph Pilates starting at the age of 14. Her Pilates is authentic- the real deal. The only drawback is that there is only one workout on each video- but they're all great, time efficient workouts.
The Complete Pilates Technique. This series of DVDs also feature authentic Pilates - meaning quick pace, few reps, original order of movements. Each DVD features several top quality workouts - the only drawback is that the moves are not broken down slowly in a separate section- which some beginners may prefer.
Romana's combined with the Complete series offers the best of both worlds, when it comes to Pilates DVDs. -

Re: pilates classes/ tapes
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 7:33 AMWorld Dance Center on Solano Ave (no website ;() has a great pilates mat teacher , Karen, who has been teaching for almost a decade there.
Mind Body Connection too is good www.mindbodyconnection.net, but they have a limited schedule. I'd like to teach again soon but I'm working on aYogafit cetification so it won't be until next year. My classes are always done in the classic style no extraneous stuff.
Avoid 24 Hour Clubs, they don't require their teachers to a have a pilates certificate to teach mat and the classes I've taken at two different locations in SF/Bay Area were ghastly.
I like The Method videos and the ones from Physical Mind. -

Re: pilates classes/ tapes
Sun, April 9, 2006 - 11:17 AMI've found an AMAZING Pilates instructor, Karen Fox, here in Emeryville, Ca, at Mind Body Connection on Doyle Street.
She's recently relocated to the area from the Southwest. Once people start knowing about her it's going to be hard to get appointements with this woman! Check her out.
About Karens approach, let me sing her praises!! Her private lessons are the best I've had in any yoga, body worker or pilates instructor yet and I've taken a lot being a dancer and athlete for some 22 years. In her work she brings in some type of body energy work/modality that allows the work you do together to cut right to point. The work feels explorative, intuitive and very opening. She pushes me in ways I've needed to be pushed and has a great sense of humor while doing it. She helps me relax. I have a lot of tension I didn't even realise I had, yikes! She's helping me build awareness about how I move, so that I can make changes. She's not fitness craze oriented. The focus feels balance and health oriented, very insightful and fun. She's a bit of a comedian, I think you'll like her as much as I do!

Enjoy!

Wed, April 26, 2006 - 11:19 AMI've been doing a yogalates dvd from Linda (I think) Solomon. Seems pretty decent but I am interested in getting a few other dvd's including JUST pilates-based ones to round out my collection so thanks for the recommendations.
